NATURE: Raccoons

In Michigan raccoons can be found everywhere. They prefer hardwood forests near streams, rivers, swamps, or ponds. However raccoons are highly adaptable so they can be found near farms, urban areas, and cities.

Raccoons are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal foods, such as fruits, nuts, berries, grain, bird eggs, insects, small rodents, etc. Contrary to popular myth, raccoons do not always wash their food before eating, although they frequently play with their food in water.

Raccoons aren't dangerous to people .Sometimes raccoons can appear to be bold or aggressive, but they are naturally cautious of people and won't attack under normal circumstances.

However, raccoons can be destructive to property and carry disease.

There are health risks of raccoons in the yard. These critters establish nearby latrines. Raccoon excrement often contains raccoon roundworms, a parasite capable of killing humans. They're also

capable of spreading rabies and leptospirosis.

If a raccoon is in your yard, keep a safe distance to avoid confrontation, as they may carry diseases.

Secure garbage cans and remove pet food to deter them. Contact local animal control for assistance, especially if the raccoon appears sick or injured.
